Matthew Broderick has a confession to make.
The Tony-winning star visited Late Night with Seth Meyers November 12 to own up to his history of onstage mishaps. During the 2022 Broadway revival of Plaza Suite, in which Broderick starred opposite his wife Sarah Jessica Parker, Broderick committed one of Broadway's most grievous sins.
"We're talking about our marriage, which is ending, or seems to be dissolving, and I kept hearing 'Please set your parameter,' or 'Want to go for a run?' Somebody's phone was talking," he tells Meyers. "And we're trying to do a pretty serious scene, and I keep hearing it talk and talk, and then I look out, I'm going to tell somebody in the audience 'Turn that off!'—they should know better! And Sarah was looking at my wrist." Broderick groans. "I had left my Apple Watch on, which was just blathering away."
It wasn't the first time Broderick had forgotten to shed his own items when getting into costume. "I have flubs. I've been in a lot, and I am bad at it," Broderick laughs. "I often forget I have my glasses on. I very often have a very carefully planned costume, and then I just come out in my own glasses, which is worse if you're wearing transition lenses. Because the lights hit you and they become sunglasses. I'm like Jack Nicholson at a basketball game."
