Music Theatre International (MTI) has added another kid-friendly hit to its licensing catalogue, with DreamWorks Theatricals' How to Train Your Dragon JR. now available for licensing.
Based on the hit DreamWorks animated film, the musical production features a book by Kate Thomas, music by Veronica Mansour, and lyrics by Mansour and Thomas. The story follows a young Viking named Hiccup, who defies tradition by befriending one of his deadliest foes—a ferocious dragon he names Toothless. Together, they work together to beat the odds and save both of their worlds.
How to Train Your Dragon Jr. was featured in the New Works Showcase at the 2026 Junior Theater Festivals in Atlanta and Sacramento.
“We’re thrilled to continue our collaboration with MTI in bringing How to Train Your Dragon, Jr. to young performers and audiences," says Universal Theatrical Group SVP Lowe Cunningham in a statement. "This title represents an exciting evolution of our family catalogue—expanding stories we love into dynamic, accessible theatrical experiences. A core part of that excitement is creating work for young people to perform, fostering a love of theatre while connecting with these stories and characters in a new and meaningful way. Kate Thomas and Veronica Mansour have done beautiful work in crafting an adaptation that captures the heart, humor, and adventure of the original, while creating something truly special for the stage."
