Industry News San Francisco's Historic Curran Theatre Sold to San Francisco Giants

Sports and theatre are finally uniting.

The Curran Theatre

San Francisco's historic Curran Theatre has been acquired by the San Francisco Giants, following a transaction with fellow owner Carole Shorenstein Hays. The venue will continue to be controlled by Ambassador Theater Group, and operated by Broadway SF. Scheduled programming is also unaffected.

Shorenstein Hays acquired the venue in 2010, and refurbished it in 2016. ATG took over its lease in 2019.

“This is a landmark moment for San Francisco, representing an unprecedented commitment by the Giants to the cultural life of our city," says San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie in a statement. "It sends a powerful signal of confidence in downtown and Union Square and the essential role the arts and entertainment play in driving our city forward."

“Acquiring the Curran expands our commitment to San Francisco and reinforces our core belief that sports, arts, and culture are essential to San Francisco’s identity, economy, and resurgence," says Giants President and CEO Larry Baer. "We intend to honor the Curran’s storied past steeped in Broadway shows and musicals and continue to build and expand the offerings of live performances reflective of our city’s culture, inclusive of music, comedy, and family entertainment."

“The Curran is where I first fell in love with the theatre as a young girl, and its curation has been the center of my professional life since I acquired it in 2010," adds Shorenstein Hays. "It was essential to me that its next stewards would ensure it remains a vibrant home for artists and audiences alike. I am so pleased that the Giants have stepped up to the plate.”

The Curran originally opened in 1922, quickly becoming a pivotal part of San Francisco's cultural scene. Among the works its helped premiere pre-Broadway are August Wilson's Fences and Wicked. The venue was immortalized on screen as the "Broadway" theatre featured in All About Eve.

Lisbeth R. Barron and Barron International Group served as financial advisers to both the Curran and Shorenstein Hays.
