Following its premiere reading in October with the charity streamer Play-PerView, Jennifer Campos Productions and Play-PerView will present a workshop production of Talene Monahon's Jane Anger or The Lamentable Comedie of JANE ANGER, that Cunning Woman, and also of Willy Shakefpeare and his Peasant Companion, Francis, Yes and Also of Anne Hathaway (also a Woman) Who Tried Very Hard. The play will run February 21–March 13 at New Ohio Theatre, marking Play-PerView's first fully-realized live production.
Jess Chayes will direct the comedy about The Bard—stuck in quarantine during the plague with a bad case of writer's block—and the cunning woman who climbs through the window and changes history. The work (billed as a feminist revenge comedy) is inspired by Jane Anger, author of the pamphlet "Her Protection for Women," published in London in 1589.
The cast includes Michael Urie (Chicken & Biscuits, Grand Horizons), Ryan Spahn, Amelia Workman (American Son), and playwright Monahon.
"Having worked with Talene several times during the pandemic, it made all the sense in the world that our first production should be of one of her plays,” says Play-PerView Artistic Director and Creative Producer Jeremy Wein. “The audience response to our reading of Jane Anger last fall made it clear that this is a piece that will get audiences excited. We look forward to using that energy to help further develop this wonderful comedy that says so much about everything we find ourselves going through at this moment."
Monahon's other works include How to Load a Musket, which premiered in early 2020 at 59E59; and Frankie & Will, which was produced virtually by MCC Theater during the pandemic.
Jane Anger features set design by Joey Mendoza, costume design by Andrea Hood, lighting design by Nic Vincent, and sound design by Tony nominee Lindsey Jones (Slave Play). Rounding out the production team are the effects consultant Matt Frew, production stage manager Michal V. Mendelson, assistant stage manager Brant Sennett, and Liz Flemming, the managing director of Play-PerView under Jennifer Campos Productions.
A commercial Off-Broadway production is slated for later this year. For ticketing and more information, visit JaneAngerPlay.com.
