Classic Stage has unveiled the final two works that will be offered in its Rediscovery Readings series this season: Karel Čapek's RUR and Patrick Hamilton's Rope. Both works will be presented in new adaptations.
First produced in 1920 as R.U.R., RUR is an eerily prescient science fiction play about a humanitarian's battle against the mass production of biologically engineered humanoid workers—the play was the first to coin the word "robot" for such creations. CSC's reading, set for March 2, will feature a new adaptation by Talene Monahon (Meet the Cartozians), with Jess Chayes directing.
Hamilton was inspired by real-world queer murderers Leopold and Loeb for his 1929 play Rope, which follows two English University students hosting a dinner party with a shocking secret: The dead body of one of their classmates is stashed in the chest the duo is using as the party's buffet table. The play previously served as the source material for the 1948 Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name. The upcoming reading, to be held March 9, features a new adaptation from Gordon Greenberg that shifts the action to 1957 Manhattan. Greenberg is also directing, returning to CSC after helming The Baker's Wife for the company earlier this season.
Casting for both readings is to be announced. Both performances will be held at the Off-Broadway company's Lynn F. Angelson Theater. Tickets are available at ClassicStage.org.
