The Broadway premiere of Gutenberg! The Musical! officially opens at the James Earl Jones Theatre October 12 after beginning previews. Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells star in the two-hander, written by Scott Brown and Anthony King. Opening night is set for October 12. The limited engagement will run through January 28, 2024.
In Gutenberg! The Musical!, Gad and Rannells (who appeared together in the original company of The Book of Mormon) play Bud and Doug, two guys who have written a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. Convinced their show is ready for Broadway, they are holding a backers' performance in which they play all the parts, aided by hundreds of baseball caps adorned by character names. (See the photo article linked below, in which the pair had fun recreating scenes of other famous Broadway duo.)
Brown and King were Tony nominated in 2019 for Best Book of a Musical for their work on Beetlejuice. Gutenberg! The Musical! made its premiere Off-Broadway in 2006, under the direction of Tony winner Alex Timbers.
Timbers returns to helm the Broadway premiere, leading a creative that includes scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, and sound designers M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer. Music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations are by T.O. Sterrett, vocal supervision is by Liz Caplan, and music direction is by Marco Paguia. Casting is by C12 Casting. Rachel Sterner serves as production stage manager. Russell Daniels and Sam Hartley are standbys for Bud and Doug.
