Original Broadway Book of Mormon co-stars Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad are working on a new comedy series together, per a report in Deadline. Adapted from the 1992 film Stay Tuned, the project is reportedly headed for streamer Hulu, with Rannells and Gad slated to star and executive produce.
The original film followed a couple who get sucked into their TV set and find themselves in a desperate fight to stay alive through 24 hours of television programming. The series—created by Akiva Goldsman, Jordan Cahan, and Greg Lassans—would reimagine the story to center on the male comedy duo. Cahan would be showrunner.
Gad and Rannells frequently play opposite each other, dating back to their star-making turns in the original company of Broadway's The Book of Mormon, Rannells as Elder Price and Gad as Elder Cunningham. Both were Tony nominees for their performances. The pair reunited onstage in 2023's Gutenberg! The Musical! Stay Tuned would be their first major screen pairing, with the exception of individual cameo appearances in History of the World, Part II.
It does not appear the show has received a series order as of yet, and no development or production timeline has yet been shared.
Pam Dawber and the late John Ritter starred in the 1992 film.
