It's been 15 years since Andrew Rannells first belted out "I Believe" in the Tony-winning The Book of Mormon at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, but the two-time Tony nominee demonstrated he has lost none of his vocal power on the March 16 broadcast of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Watch the Broadway favorite, joined by current Mormon stars, revisit "I Believe" in the video above.
Mormon co-creators Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez also announced on the broadcast that the June 9–14 performances of the Tony-winning musical will feature appearances in every show by original cast members, including Tony nominees Josh Gad (Elder Cunningham) and Rannells (Elder Price), Tony winner Nikki M. James (Nabulungi), and Tony nominee Rory O’Malley (Elder McKinley). The original cast members, celebrating the musical's 15th anniversary, will perform select scenes and songs at each performance alongside the current cast, with no show exactly the same. The “Magical Mormon Mystery Week” performances will also feature Parker, Stone, and Lopez as well as Broadway’s original Mormon and Ugandan ensembles at certain performances, plus other surprise guests from the Mormon family throughout the week.
Rannells was also Tony-nominated for his performance in the revival of Falsettos. His additional Broadway credits include All In: Comedy About Love, Gutenberg! The Musical, The Boys in the Band, Hamilton, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Jersey Boys, and Hairspray.
The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway March 24, 2011, subsequently winning nine 2011 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. The Broadway production also won five Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical; the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical; the Drama League Award for Best Musical; and four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best Musical.
The Book of Mormon features a book, music, and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. The production is choreographed by Casey Nicholaw and directed by Nicholaw and Parker.
