FORT SALEM THEATER SEEKS CREATIVE TEAM MEMBERS FOR 2026 SEASON

Fort Salem Theater, a nonprofit theater in scenic Washington County, NY, is seeking directors, designers, and production staff for its upcoming 2026 season. Productions range from contemporary musicals to classic plays and youth programming, offering opportunities for artists at a variety of experience levels.

Due to the limited rehearsal hours, this is a great gig for someone who works a remote day job, or to explore all that Upstate New York and nearby rural Vermont have to offer.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

“Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill”

Performances: July 17 – August 2, 2026

  • Director/Chorepgrapher ($700 stipend) (Positions can be divided.)

  • Music Director ($1,500+ stipend)

  • Stage Manager ($200 stipend)

“The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition”

Performances: August 7 – 9, 2026
Note: "Camp style" rehearsals held Monday–Friday afternoons for this production only.

  • Director ($800 stipend)

“To Kill a Mockingbird”

Performances: September 18 – 27, 2026

  • Director ($500 stipend)

REHEARSAL & PRODUCTION SCHEDULE

Rehearsals are typically held:

  • Sundays: 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM

  • Monday–Thursday: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Rehearsal schedules are dependent on cast availability and production needs. Most productions rehearse for 5–7 weeks maximum.

All directors and designers are required to attend a weekly 1-hour production meeting outside of rehearsal hours.

HOUSING & TRANSPORTATION

  • Directors and Music Directors may be offered free housing with local host families or low-cost Airbnb accommodations, pending availability.

  • Transportation to/from New York is not provided, though:

    • Pickup/drop-off from Albany can be arranged

    • Local transportation support (rehearsals, errands, groceries) is available

A personal vehicle is strongly recommended for flexibility and to enjoy the surrounding area.

COMPENSATION

  • Stipends are paid upon completion of contract.

  • Please do not submit if you are not amenable to the listed stipend range.

  • Limited negotiation within posted ranges may be possible.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Directors are not required to remain past opening night.

  • Audition and first rehearsal dates are flexible within reason.

  • Candidates should be comfortable working with performers of all experience levels and in a collaborative, community-centered environment where many artists balance theater with full-time jobs and family commitments.
