Readings and Workshops Under the Radar 2026 Festival Will Present Over 30 Productions, Including Elevator Repair Services' Ulysses

The experimental theatre festival celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.

Experimental theatre festival Under the Radar has announced the programming for its 2026 iteration.  The festival will run January 7–25, featuring over 30 shows across New York City.  Highlights of the programming include Elevator Repair Services' Ulysses, Brokentalkers’ Bellow, and Kinoshita Kabuki’s Kanjincho.

Under the Radar reemerged in 2024, bringing back a new, itinerant version of the festival after being on the brink of closure after its longtime host, the Public Theater, announced it would no longer help produce the festival. (The Public Theater is still collaborating with individual productions, including Ulysses.) The festival is led by artistic director Mark Russell alongside co-creative directors Meropi Peponides of Radical Evolution and Kaneza Schaal.

In 2025, for the first time ever, Under the Radar became a commissioning body, and in 2026, the roster of works the festival itself commissioned includes four commissioned or co-commissioned works: Lisa Fagan and Lena Engelstein Friday Night Rat Catchers, Hawtplates’s Dream Feed, Kaneza Schaal’s DATA ROOM, and excerpts from A Tale of Fire and Flight, a new in-development work from j. bouey.

The Festival will also include an industry symposium for artistic professionals to address the most pressing issues facing the creative sector and new work development systems worldwide.
