Swept Away Extends Broadway Run as Ticket Sales Surge

Don't batten down the hatches just yet! Avett Brothers musical Swept Away, which last week announced an abrupt December 15 closing, is sticking around a little longer. Following a surge in ticket sales—what was initially set to be the final week of performances has already completely sold out—the show has moved its closing date to December 29, a two-week extension. The news broke when word of the extension, sent by ticket-selling platform Telecharge to ticketholders for formerly cancelled performances, hit social media.

In a curtain call speech December 10, cast member Stark Sands said, “The story we tell is about the will to survive against incredible odds. Last week it was announced that Swept Away would be closing and then, something happened. We came to work the next day, and we walked out to a completely sold-out house. And then the next day it happened again and then it happened again…I’ve never seen it before; we’ve never felt this…So I am pleased to announce that Swept Away will be extending for two more weeks. The run is now going until December 29.”

When it closed December 29, the show will have played 20 previews and 48 regular performances.

Leading the cast are Tony winner John Gallagher Jr. (Spring Awakening) as Mate, Sands (Kinky Boots) as Big Brother, Adrian Blake Enscoe (Dickinson) as Little Brother, and Wayne Duvall (1984) as Captain, all reprising their performances from the musical's earlier mountings at Berkeley Repertory and Arena Stage.

Returning alongside them are ensemble members Hunter Brown, Matt DeAngelis, Cameron Johnson, Brandon Kalm, Michael J. Mainwaring, Orville Mendoza, Tyrone L. Robinson, and John Sygar. Newly joining the company are Josh Breckenridge, Rico LeBron, Chase Peacock, and David Rowen. Swings John Michael Finley and Robert Pendilla round out the company.

Swept Away follows four survivors of an 1888 shipwreck off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts. As they struggle to stay alive, they must question whether or not they can live with the consequences of their actions, and discover how tragedy can lead to forgiveness.

The creative team also includes music arranger and orchestrator Chris Miller, music arranger and orchestrator/music supervisor Brian Usifer, music director Will Van Dyke, Tony-winning set designer Rachel Hauck, Tony-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty, four-time Tony-winning lighting designer Kevin Adams, Tony-winning sound designer John Shivers, and casting directors Jim Carnahan, Jillian Cimini, and Alexandre Bleau.
