Casting and the creative team have been announced for Signature Theatre's upcoming production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which will play the ARK Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, April 15–June 22.
Associate Artistic Director Ethan Heard will direct the queer cult classic musical, which will feature Sawyer Smith (Steppenwolf’s Amadeus) as Hedwig and Vanessa (V) Sterling (Arden Theatre Company’s Into the Woods) as Yitzhak. Christian Montgomery and Deema Turkomani are understudies.
The band will include Sam Carolla on drums, Marika Countouris on keys, Alec Green on guitar, and Joanna Smith on bass.
Hedwig features a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. The Broadway premiere of the Off-Broadway hit began previews March 29, 2014, at the Belasco, prior to an official opening April 22 with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. During the show's 507-performance run, the title role was played by Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, Mitchell, Darren Criss, and Taye Diggs. The production closed September 13, 2015.
Mitchell starred in the original Off-Broadway production of Hedwig
as the "internationally ignored" East German singer fronting a
fictional rock-n-roll band at the Jane Street Theatre, earning an Obie
Award and an Outer Critics Circle nomination. He also starred as Hedwig
in a 2001 film version he directed.
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch is all about rage and joy, grit, and glitter,” said director Heard in a statement. “In this horrifying time, when LGBTQIA+ folks are being wrongfully targeted and villainized, Hedwig fights back, resisting and insisting on queer liberation. Celebrating the artistry of trans, non-binary, and gender-non-conforming performers and creatives, our 2025 production—almost 30 years after the original and happily coinciding with WorldPride in D.C.—explodes the binarchy and revels in gender f*ckery, queer pride, and self-love!”
The creative team also includes choreographer Ashleigh King, music director Marika Countouris, scenic designer Richie Ouellette, costume designer Erik Teague, lighting designer K Rudolph, sound designer Eric Norris, wig and makeup designer Ali Pohanka, dialect coach Zach Campion, and illustrator Alex Kuhn. Casting is by Jorge Acevedo with New York casting by Geoff Josselson.
Julia Singer is the stage manager.
