Emmy Award-winner Maya Rudolph stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert April 13 to discuss her upcoming Broadway debut as Mary Todd Lincoln in Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary!

“This is a show I truly feel is like no other. It’s really, truly its own thing. It’s goofy and weird and bitchy and ridiculous and campy and silly, you can do everything in it,” Rudolph shares with Colbert. “For me to do Broadway and for this to be the first show I’m doing makes so much sense. It’s a part I was born to do.”

Rudolph reflects on how her own family’s background in performance (her parents being legendary musician Minnie Riperton and producer Richard Rudolph) inspired her to want to pursue the stage from a young age.

“No joke, I have always wanted to be on Broadway since I was a little girl,” she says as Colbert pulls out a picture and quote from one of Rudolph’s elementary yearbooks.

Rudolph joins Oh, Mary! at the Lyceum Theatre on April 28, playing a limited eight-week engagement through June 20. She will succeed John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch,) who has been in the role since February 3.
