Arya Shahi is directing the play following four adult students in a classroom near Tehran preparing for an English proficiency exam.

Sanaz Toossi's English begins performances at San Diego's Old Globe January 27. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play is directed by Arya Shahi, and will run at the venue through February 25.

English centers on group of adults in Iran preparing for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) in an "English Only" classroom. The work earned Toossi Williamstown Theatre Festival's 2020 L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award, as well as the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The cast includes Mary Apick as Roya, Ari Derambakhsh as Goli, Tara Grammy as Elham, Joe Joseph as Omid, and Pooya Mohseni as Marjan.

The production arrives in San Diego following its critically acclaimed world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2022. 

English features scenic design by Sadra Tehrani, costume design by Afsaneh Aayani, lighting design by Amanda Zieve, sound design by Megumi Katayama, dialect coaching by Ana Bayat, casting by Caparelliotis Casting, and production stage management by Chandra R.M. Anthenill.
