The Verdict Reviews: What Did Critics Have to Say About Kimberly Akimbo On Broadway?

Victoria Clark and Justin Cooley star in Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire's new musical.

Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire's new musical Kimberly Akimbo officially opened at Broadway's Booth Theatre November 10, and the reviews are coming in. With a book and lyrics by Lindsay-Abaire (based on his play of the same name) and music by Tony winner Jeanine Tesori, Kimberly Akimbo is directed by Jessica Stone. Performances began October 12. Tony winner Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza) stars as Kimberly, a bright New Jersey teenager with an aging disease that makes her look like a 72-year-old lady. She leads a cast that also includes Justin Cooley in his Broadway debut, Tony nominee Steven Boyer (Hand to God), Alli Mauzey (Cry Baby, Wicked), Milligan (Head Over Heels), and Fernell Hogan (The Prom), plus Olivia Elease Hardy, Michael Iskander, and Nina White, all making their Broadway debuts.

Rounding out the company as understudies are Colleen Fitzpatrick, Jim Hogan, Betsy Morgan, Skye Alyssa Friedman, Miguel Gil, and Alex Vinh.

The musical had its world premiere Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company in 2021. The complete cast from that run has continued on for the Broadway bow.

Stone's creative team also includes choreographer Danny Mefford, music director Chris Fenwick, orchestrator John Clancy (with additional orchestrations by Macy Schmidt), scenic designer David Zinn, costume designer Sarah Laux, lighting designer Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, sound designer Kai Harada, projection designer Lucy MacKinnon, and wig, hair, and make-up designer J. Jared Janas. Arabella Powell is the production stage manager, and the production is cast by The Telsey Office's Craig Burns.

Producers for the Broadway production are David Stone, Atlantic Theater Company, James L. Nederlander, LaChanze, John Gore, Patrick Catullo, and Aaron Glick.
