Concord Theatricals has acquired worldwide English licensing rights for Paula Vogel's Mother Play and will license the play via its Samuel French imprint. The acquisition adds a Vogel play to Concord's catalogue for the first time in nearly five decades, joining her 1977 work Meg (Vogel's other plays are licensed by Broadway Licensing's Dramatists Play Service).
Mother Play (A play in five evictions) made its premiere on Broadway earlier this year via Second Stage, earning a Tony nomination for Best Play and nods for each of its three-member cast (Jessica Lange, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Jim Parsons). The semi-autobiographical work tracks a single mother and her two children over 40 years in the D.C. area, covering evictions, gin, cigarettes, and more accoutrements of a changing world. Tina Landau directed the world premiere.
“I am delighted that Mother Play (A play in five evictions) has found a licensing home at Concord Theatricals and Samuel French,” says Vogel in a statement. “I am eager to work with this incredible team to find theatrical homes around the world for this play about mothers and children: we are never too old to forgive—or to laugh—about our shared past.”
“We are deeply honored that Paula has chosen us to represent Mother Play,” adds Concord Chief Theatricals Executive Sean Patrick Flahaven. “She is undoubtedly one of the most daring, honest, thoughtful, and influential playwrights whom we are fortunate to have working in theatre. We’ve loved her work for decades, and Mother Play made us laugh, gasp, and weep on Broadway. We’re sure audiences worldwide will feel the same.”
Vogel is a Pulitzer winner for her 1998 play How I Learned to Drive, and, along with Mother Play, received Tony nominations for Indecent and How I Learned to Drive.
