Lin-Manuel Miranda spent his childhood summers in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, which fans of In The Heights will recognize from his lyrics in the Tony-winning musical. In a new streaming series on behalf of Discover Puerto Rico, Miranda returns to the neighborhood to reveal some of the inspirations behind his show and himself as a writer.
“There’s a song in In The Heights called ‘Carnaval Del Barrio’ that was based on the carnavales that I would experience here,” Miranda says.
The character Daniela, who leads the song, recalls “growing up in the hills of Vega Alta.” See more of the neighborhood Miranda wrote about in the video above. And watch the whole series at DiscoverPuertoRico.com.
