Broadway and West End luminary Lea Salonga is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A date for the star's addition remains to be announced by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
Salonga, recently of Broadway's Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends, is being honored for a long career that has seen her become a star of Broadway and West End stages, and of movies, too. Dubbed the "Shirley Temple of the Philippines" as a child star in Manila, Salonga reached near instant adult stardom creating the role of Kim in the original London production of Miss Saigon, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's follow-up to Les Misérables. She won an Olivier Award for the breakout performance, and a Tony when she brought it across the pond.
Soon thereafter, she made her most iconic film performance, serving as the singing voice for Jasmine in Disney's 1992 animated classic Aladdin. She would also go on to provide the singing vocals for the title character of Mulan in 1998.
But Salonga has found her most frequent home on the stage. Soon after Saigon, she became one of Les Misérables' preeminent Éponines, including singing the role for the televised 10th anniversary concert; and has also appeared in Flower Drum Song, Allegiance, Once On This Island, and Here Lies Love on Broadway.
In her native Manila, Salonga's prolific stage career has included roles in Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Fun Home, God of Carnage, Cats, Cinderella, Baby, Proof, They're Playing Our Song, Grease, and My Fair Lady.
