Hell's Kitchen star Maleah Joi Moon won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a
Leading Role in a Musical at the 77th Annual Tony Awards, held at
Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater June 16.
Moon won for her performance as Ali in the new musical inspired by 15-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys' life.
Others in the category included Lempicka's Eden Espinosa, Days of Wine and Roses' Kelli O'Hara, The Notebook's Maryann Plunkett, and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club's Gayle Rankin.
The musical at the Shubert Theatre centers
on 17-year-old Ali and her mother, sharing a cramped apartment near
Times Square. Ali wants to live out her NYC dream, but Mom (2024 Tony nominee Shoshana Bean) is scared her
daughter will repeat her own mistakes.
The new musical, which features a book by Kristoffer Diaz, marks Moon's Broadway debut.
