New Jersey's Two River Theater and Deaf West Theatre will join forces to give a world premiere to Ivan Menchell and Caroline Kay's musical Elephant Shoes next summer, but Playbill has a first listen to one of the songs.
Hear Kay sing and play "Safety in Numbers," with signing by Daniela Maucere, above.
Jeff Calhoun (Newsies) will direct and choreograph the upcoming premiere, set to play Two River June 4-28, 2026, presented in association with Kevin Ryan and Diane Scott Carter. Casting is to be announced.
The work follows Cy as his brilliant invention, which instantly translates spoken English into American Sign Language, is on the precipice of revolutionizing human communication. Cy has his eye on coder Roxy, only for his best friend Chris to sweep in—and yes, those Cyrano notes are intentional. In "Safety in Numbers," Roxy sings of the escape she gets from her coding work.
As with earlier Deaf West productions of musicals like Big River (also directed by Calhoun) and Spring Awakening, Elephant Shoes will feature both spoken (and sung) English and ASL.
