Frank Wildhorn musical Death Note will get a symphonic concert premiere at Taipei Music Center November 29-30, also marking the 10th anniversary of the musical. The performances will feature orchestral arrangements by Jason Howland.
The work is adapted from Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's best-selling Japanese manga series of the same name, with a score by Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy, and a book by Ivan Menchell. The story follows Light Yagami, a high school student in Tokyo who comes across a discarded notebook owned by Ryuk, a mythological god of death. Discovering he can kill anyone by just writing their names in the supernatural notebook, Light takes justice into his own hands by filling the notebook with names of the nation’s most wanted criminals. The work has amassed a global fan base thanks to international productions in Japan, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, London, and more.
The upcoming concert performances will star Hayato Hakizawa and Teppei Koike.
“Frank is an artist whose work connects us across borders, and it’s my thrill to help bring his incredible musical to the concert stage in a whole new way,” says producer Sophie Qi in a statement. “Uplifting creative voices like his and bringing musical theatre to even wider audiences is the root of my mission as a producer.”
“The adventure that is Death Note has been one the coolest experiences of my career, and now, with the debut of the Symphonic version, the Death Note world gets bigger and richer and even more exciting!” adds Wildhorn. “With Jason’s arrangements and musical direction, Death Note will soar!! A special thanks to Sophie and Harmonia and HoriPro for making this happen!!!”
