The Tony-winning Deaf West Theatre company will present an industry preview of the new musical Elephant Shoes at the Museum of Broadway October 20.
Performed in American Sign Language and spoken English, Elephant Shoes features a book by Ivan Menchell and music and lyrics by Caroline Kay. The musical is directed and choreographed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun.
The invitation-only event will include performances from Daniel Durant (Deaf West’s American Idiot), Aisha Jackson (The Great Gatsby, The Notebook), James Olivas (American Idiot, Evita), and Siena Rafter (Twelfth Night, Runaways), with appearances by the show’s creative team.
A modern-day retelling of Cyrano, the musical focuses on Cy, an inventor on the verge of revolutionizing communication through his invention that instantly translates spoken English into American Sign Language, and vice versa. But his breakthrough means nothing if he cannot connect with the one person he longs for, Roxy, a whip-smart coder and integral part of turning their tech dream into reality. As they work side by side, Cy finds himself falling in love, only to watch his best friend, Chris, sweep Roxy off her feet.
Elephant Shoes will have its world premiere as a co-production between Two River Theater and Deaf West from June 4-28, 2026 as part of Two River's 32nd season, presented in association with Kevin Ryan and Diane Scott Carter. Casting for the world premiere run is to be announced.
