Broadway's Elena Shaddow (The Bridges of Madison County, The Visit, La Cage aux Folles) will make history tonight as the first performer to portray both Clara and Margaret in different professional productions of The Light in the Piazza.
Shaddow, who played daughter Clara in the first national tour of the Tony-winning musical, now plays mother Margaret in a concert performance November 27 at the Alexandra Palace Theatre in London. Presented by Quick Fantastic (Gypsy in Concert, Sunset Boulevard at Royal Albert Hall), the production is directed by Charlotte Conquest, and a 15-piece orchestra is conducted by Alex Parker.
Based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer and featuring a book by Craig Lucas and a Tony-winning score by Adam Guettel, The Light in the Piazza follows an American mother vacationing in Florence, Italy, with her daughter, who falls in love with a local man and forces her mother to embrace her own undreamt-of opportunities in the shadow of a tragic accident.
The original Broadway production won six Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
