Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: Will The Outsiders Soon Be in the Top 5?

The 2024 Best Musical Tony winner is rapidly becoming one of Broadway's best-performing shows.

Broadway had a sleepy week last week—which isn't to say it underperformed. The 26 currently-running shows brought in a total of more than $30 million, but the show-by-show numbers largely repeated some trends that have been in full effect for weeks now.

Most notably, 2024 Best Musical Tony winner The Outsiders is slowly shaping up to be a hot ticket. The show has been breaking box-office records for several weeks in a row—last week was the seventh. It's still sitting at the seventh spot on the list of highest grossers, but its continued upward trajectory makes one wonder if we will see it in the top 5 sooner rather than later. It's average ticket price was $177.26 last week with more than 100% of seats sold (meaning it was standing-room only at the Jacobs), but there's room there to grow. Stay tuned.

Those all-important top five spots went to four usual suspects (The Lion King, Wicked, Hamilton, and Hell's Kitchen, the latter the consistently best performing of this season's newest offerings). Aladdin and Cabaret tend to duke it out for that final spot, and the Disney long runner took it last week. The vastly higher seating capacity at the New Amsterdam gives the family favorite a lot more opportunities to achieve that, even with a dramatically lower average ticket price—$116.83 versus Cabaret's $182.72, the second-highest on Broadway currently.

We did have one new face last week with a new revival of Once Upon a Mattress, a transfer from New York City Center Encores! Over just five previews, the Sutton Foster- and Ana Gasteyer-led production brought in $529,882. Translated to a regular eight-performance week, the same performance could put it fairly close to joining The $1 Million Club in its first full week on the boards. We shall see!

Take a look at the full report here.

The $1 Million Club (shows that earned $1 million or more at the box office):

(14 of 26 currently running productions)

The 90s Club (shows that played to 90% or higher of their seats filled over the entire week):
