Black Broadway Men has set a date for the third annual Hinton Battle Day of Dance, a day of free dance master classes and a panel discussion given in honor of the late three-time Tony winner. This year's event will be held at Open Jar Studios May 30.
Those interested in participating can register at DayofDanceNY.com beginning March 16 and continuing through May 22. Admission is first-come, first-served.
Master class instructors are to be announced. A Q&A panel discussion will feature a discussion of Battle's Tony-winning career with some of the late Broadway icon's friends, family, and colleagues. The event will also see the presentation of the Legacy and Rising Star Awards. A dancer will also be selected to receive a scholarship to the Verdon Fosse Legacy's 2026 summer program.
Three-time Tony-winning dancer, actor, and choreographer Hinton Battle passed away in 2024 following a brief illness, at the age of 67. Battle made his Broadway debut as the original Scarecrow in The Wiz at the age of 18, receiving momentous acclaim for his energetically-athletic dance style. He would later go on to work with some of the most influential choreographers in the industry, including Bob Fosse in the original production of Dancin' and Michael Bennett in the original production of Dreamgirls.
Battle received three Tony Awards for originating three vastly varied roles: in Sophisticated Ladies, The Tap Dance Kid, and Miss Saigon. He won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for all three roles, making him the most-awarded actor in the category's history.
