On Our Team has launched Pay Equity Standards, a tool for theatre companies to establish and maintain pay equity internally and for the public to have transparency in supporting equitably paid theatre. The tracking system is available to theatre companies nationwide as a checklist that lays out a path to creating equitable pay through three lines of focus: transparency, working conditions, and accountability.
Theatre companies that opt in and meet all certification requirements will be eligible to receive a Pay Equity Standards Badge. Certification will be available to the public in an effort to inform audiences who wish to support work that aligns with their values. Within the industry, workers will be able to make more informed decisions on employment with the additional information. Foundations using the certification as a way to direct funds and grants to organizations that center equity remains a possibility.
Certification is valid for the calendar year with annual renewal. Applying for 2022 certification is open now through August 31, with 2023 certification beginning on September 1.
Co-Founders Bob Kuhn, Christine Pascual, Elsa Hiltner, and Theresa Ham established On Our Team in 2020 to address pay and labor equity issues in the industry. After extensive interviews with theatre leaders, executives, artists, and staff, they developed Pay Equity Standards to meet the present needs of the arts and culture sector and to offer support to freelance and contract artists as calls for equity, diversity, and accessibility within the industry are renewed.
