Invitation-only industry presentations of Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, a new musical based on Moyoco Anno's manga graphic novel of the same name, are presented at Gibney Dance in Manhattan February 20–21.
With music and lyrics by Tony-winning Spring Awakening composer Duncan Sheik, the new musical also features a book by Leah Nanako Winkler; music direction, conducting, and vocal and incidental music arrangements by Or Matias; and direction and choreography by Tony winner Rob Ashford.
Anno's Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen was
serialized in a manga magazine from 2013 to 2018 and later published as
a two-volume set. It received the Excellence Award at the Japan Media
Arts Festival in 2020. It follows a young sex worker named Colette living in early 20th-century Paris.
“Memoirs is a bold, sensual, and innovative new work that pushes the boundaries of conventional musical theatre,” said executive producer Antonio Marion in a statement. “Duncan and Leah have expertly taken Moyoco Anno’s Manga series and given it new life for the stage—all through the unparalleled direction and choreography of Rob Ashford.”
Also producing are Kenny Kurokawa and Takeshi Tanaka along with associate producers Nobu Matsukura, Shin Yamada, Yu Anne Ando, Ryohei Otani, and Yumi. Bespoke Theatricals will serve as general managers.
