Zoë Kim's Did You Eat? (밥 먹었니?) has extended its run Off-Broadway at The Public Theater prior to opening. The production will begin performances October 14, and will now run one week longer, through November 16. An official opening is set for October 24.
Presented by Ma-Yi Theater Company, Kim's autobiographical solo show explores love’s many forms–how it’s learned, given, and reflected inward. The staging is directed by Chris Yejin and features choreography by Iris McCloughan.
In the work, Kim shapeshifts into the souls of her family through a landscape of memories where tears and laughter collide, exploring Korean-American identity, belonging, and healing.
The production features scenic design by Tanya Orellana, costume design by Harriet Jung, lighting design by Minjoo Kim, sound design by Tae Jong Park, projection design by Yee Eun Nam, dramaturgy by Amrita Ramanan, and voice and text coaching by Julie Congress. Taeuk Kang serves as production stage manager alongside Intuitive Production Management as production manager.
Did You Eat? (밥 먹었니?) was previously staged at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival for a successful three-week run, which garnered positive reviews from critics. Kim penned a trio of essays for Playbill about the experience, writing: "I made Did You Eat? (밥 먹었니?) as a love language to my inner child, as an expression of self-love to who I am, and as a love letter to all Korean daughters." Read the first essay in the series here.
The Ma-Yi Theater Company and Public Theater production marks the beginning of Ma-Yi's residency at the Public, which will also includes the world premiere of Jeena Yi’s JESA.
