You've never heard "Wade in the Water" like this. The hit new musical Mexodus has shared exclusively with Playbill one of the songs from the show. Above, see actor/show creator Nygel D. Robinson perform "Wade in the Water Remix," which sees Robinson's character Henry debating how he will escape slavery, before finding inspiration in the African spiritual.
Mexodus, created by and starring Robinson and Brian Quijada, is currently running Off-Broadway at Audible Theater's Minetta Lane Theatre. It has just been extended a second time to November 1 (the show began performances September 18).
The show is inspired by the real-life stories of African Americans who escaped bondage by going south into Mexico. Robinson and Quijada play all the characters in the show, and play all the music—with the help of a looping station that allows them to create the arrangements for every song in the show live in front of the audience every night.
After hit runs in in Baltimore; Washington, D.C; Berkeley, California; and New York, the duo revealed to Playbill that they will take the show on tour. And there's also talks of an encore engagement in New York. Mexodus will be recorded for release as an Audible Original June 18, 2026.
