Thelma & Louise, a musical adaptation of Callie Khouri’s Oscar and Golden-Globe nominated movie, will make its world premiere in the fall, opening the Young Vic's 2026-2027 season September 3-October 24.

Directed by Trip Cullman (Becky Shaw), the production will feature Amy Lennox (Cabaret, Kinky Boots) and Rachel Tucker (Wicked, Come From Away) in the title roles with additional casting to be announced. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon headed the cast of the film, which earned six Oscar nominations. Callie Khouri took home the Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

Khouri has penned the book for the musical adaptation, which will feature music and lyrics by Grammy nominee Neko Case. (Amanda Seyfried starred in a workshop of the musical in 2023).

The upcoming production will also have choreography by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, scenography by Christine Jones and Brett J. Banakis, costume design by Ryan Dawson Laight, lighting design by Natasha Chivers, sound design by Gareth Owen, musical supervision by Kimberly Grigsby, orchestration and arrangements by John Clancy, and musical direction by Ed Bussey, with additional music by Carl Newman, Paul Rigby, and Zoe Sarnak

The creative producers are Mandy Greenfield and Sonia Friedman Productions, and the creative consultant is Imogen Brodie. Stuart Burt is the casting director, Peter Noden is the casting associate, Kev McCurdy is the fight director, Yarit Dor is the intimacy director, and Danièle Lydon is the voice and dialect coach. The creative team also includes associate director Chelsea Walker, associate designer Matthew Buttrey, associate sound designer Rob Jones, music producer Jeff Galegher, and orchestra manager Sylvia Addison. RCI Theatricals are the U.S. general managers.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Imogen Brodie said in a joint statement, “From the moment it premiered in 1991, Thelma & Louise was a cultural phenomenon and an instant classic. Callie Khouri’s groundbreaking, funny, deeply moving, and empowering film sparked a vital and urgent conversation around violence against women and girls, and women’s autonomy in the face of systemic injustice.

"Astonishingly, nearly 35 years later, we find ourselves in a world where female, indeed all human rights are under serious threat, making this story feel not only relevant but necessary. At its heart, it speaks to freedom, solidarity, friendship, and the ongoing fight for equality—all of which continue to resonate today. In bringing this story to the stage, we are reimagining it theatrically and musically, so it feels wholly born for the live experience—immediate, visceral, and a rollercoaster of a night out."

Writer Khouri said, "I’m thrilled to be collaborating with the Young Vic, Sonia Friedman Productions, Scott Delman, Ley Line Entertainment, and Mandy Greenfield in this newly re-imagined story of Thelma and Louise. It’s still a wild and emotional ride made even better by the contribution of the enormous talents of Neko Case, Trip Cullman, and our amazing creative team. I can’t wait for audiences to experience this timely re-telling."

Young Vic Theatre’s Artistic Director and CEO Nadia Fall's season in the Main House will also include the premiere of the English-language adaptation of Christian Kracht's novel Eurotrash, adapted by Colin Teevan and directed by Walter Meierjohann. Ben Whishaw and Kathryn Hunter will star as a mother and son who embark on a road trip through the Swiss Alps to give away their family fortune in an attempt to escape the shadows of their past. Performances are scheduled for November 13, 2026–January 9, 2027.

La Distance, written and directed by Tiago Rodrigues, will follow, running January 22-February 13. First performed at the Festival d’Avignon in 2025, the U.K. premiere will feature original cast members Alison Dechamps and Adama Diop reprising their roles as father and daughter. The play is described in press notes as a "human exploration of separation, hope, and the bond between parent and child, set within a collapsing world."

Olivier and BAFTA winner debbie tucker green (ear for eye) will direct the world premiere of her new play dissent, about humanity's capacity for monstrous behavior (March 5–April 24), and Artistic Director Fall will direct a revival of August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, running May 14-July 10.

Offerings in the Maria will include Shedinburgh, showcasing over 40 artists from the Edinburgh Festival's Fringe, including Inua Ellams, Sara Pascoe, Bryony Kimmings, and Rosie Jones (September 19-October 10, 2026); and Theresa Ikoko's award-winning play Girls, which is set in Nigeria during the 2014 militant insurrection when hundreds of girls were kidnapped from their homes (October 22-November 21, directed by Ewa Dina).
