Victor Carrillo Tracey will take over the role Sodapop Curtis in The Outsiders on Broadway beginning October 21.
Tracey, who currently understudies three roles and had been playing the role of Paul, will take over the role of Sodapop for a little over one month while original star, Jason Schmidt, goes on a leave of absence. Schmidt is set to return November 28.
Additionally, Davis Wayne will play Paul from October 19 through November 9. Original cast members Brent Comer and Dan Berry will return to the roles of Darrel and Paul, respectively, on November 11. Meanwhile, Kevin Csolak stepped into the role of Bob Sheldon September 26 while original cast member Kevin William Paul takes a leave of absence to appear in Classic Stage Company's production of The Baker's Wife. Paul will return to the role January 6, 2026.
Currently running at the Jacobs Theatre, where the musical opened April 11, 2024, The Outsiders is adapted from S.E. Hinton's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation. Set in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, the musical follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family of "outsiders," who are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. The musical features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine and music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival and Levine.
The Outsiders won the Best Musical Tony Award as well as Best Direction of a Musical (Danya Taymor), Lighting Design (Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim), and Sound Design (Cody Spencer) at the 2024 Tony Awards.
The production also features music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by Levine; choreography by Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman; scenography by AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian; costume design by Sarafina Bush; Tony-winning lighting design by Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim; Tony-winning sound design by Cody Spencer; and music direction by Matt Hinkley. Casting is by The TRC Company's Xavier Rubiano.
