The new series Britannia, written by Olivier winner and Tony-nominated playwright Jez Butterworth, premieres in the U.S. on Amazon Prime January 26.
Set in the year 43 AD, the period drama follows the Roman Imperial Army as they encounter Celtic druids in their conquest of the mysterious British isle.
The cast features a number of U.K. stage veterans, including fellow Olivier winner and Tony nominee Zoë Wanamaker, Olivier-winning Matilda star Eleanor Worthington Cox, Olivier nominee Kelly Reilly, and David Morrissey.
Butterworth’s plays include Jerusalem (which marked his Broadway debut and subsequently earned him a Tony nomination), The River, and, most recently, The Ferryman, which currently plays the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End. His previous writing credits for the screen include Spectre and Edge of Tomorrow.
The Ferryman, directed by Sam Mendes, premiered at the Royal Court in 2017, selling out its entire run in a single day. The 37-person play is currently scheduled to play the West End through May 19.
