SNL alum Taran Killam has joined the cast of Broadway's upcoming Spamalot. The comedian will star as Lancelot. The revival is set to play the St. James Theatre beginning October 31 prior to a November 16 official opening night.
The new production of the 2005 musical comes to the Main Stem following a run at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center earlier this year, directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes, who will return to stage the Broadway bow.
Alex Brightman, who played Lancelot in the production's Kennedy Center run, will succeed Killam in the role beginning January 9, 2024.
Killam, who has previously appeared on Broadway as King George in Hamilton and as Dr. Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors at New York City Center, joins a previously announced cast that includes Tony nominee Christopher Fitzgerald (Waitress) as Patsy, Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart (Aladdin, Hamilton) as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer (Beetlejuice) as The Lady of the Lake, Tony nominee Ethan Slater (SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical) as The Historian/Prince Herbert, Jimmy Smagula (Billy Elliot) as Sir Bedevere, Drama Desk Award winner Michael Urie (Shrinking, Torch Song) as Sir Robin, and Nik Walker (Hamilton) as Sir Galahad. Iglehart, Kritzer, Smagula, Urie, and Walker are reprising their roles from the Kennedy Center engagement.
The work features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle and music by Idle and John Du Prez, "lovingly ripped off" from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Its first Broadway outing earned 14 Tony nods and won three, including Best Musical. The musical follows King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on their quest for the Holy Grail, complete with coconut-shell horse hooves, shrubbery, the Knights Who Say "Ni!," and more.
The transfer marks the first production from Kennedy Center's Broadway Center Stage series to make it to Broadway. Jeffrey Finn, who is the artistic director of the series, is producing the Broadway revival as well.
The production will also have scenic and projection design by Paul Tate dePoo III, costume design by Jen Caprio, lighting design by Cory Pattak, sound design by Kai Harada and Haley Parcher, wig design by Tom Watson and music direction by John Bell. Casting is by JZ Casting.
Matthew Lacey will serve as the production stage manager, and RCI Theatricals will serve as general manager.
