Every Brilliant Thing Ruled a Revival for 2026 Tony Awards

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met April 9 for the third time this season to issue rulings on the 2025-2026 season, jointly deciding where productions and artists will be considered for this year's Tony Award nominations. Productions discussed included Every Brilliant Thing, Giant, and Dog Day Afternoon.
The Tony committee, which previously met in the fall and last February, usually categorizes artists based on how they are billed in the opening night Playbill of the show. These meetings are to determine category eligibility for artists who fall outside that standard procedure.
The 2026 Tony Awards, hosted by Grammy winner Pink, is set for June 7 at Radio City Music Hall, with nominations to be unveiled May 5. This year's Tony Awards will consider productions that open by April 26.
This round of rulings was especially light. Every Brilliant Thing, currently making its premiere Broadway bow at the Hudson Theatre, will be designated as a revival due to its status as a well-established work both at regional theatres worldwide and in the New York theatre scene. The play bowed Off-Broadway starring co-playwright Jonny Donahoe in 2014, a production that was also filmed live for HBO.
This ruling will not affect star Daniel Radcliffe's eligibility. And as always when works making their Broadway debut are ruled revivals, a potential nomination for Best Revival of a Play would go to both this staging's producers and playwrights Duncan Macmillan and Donahoe.
The only other special ruling the committee made is that above-the-title billed Ebon Moss-Bachrach will be considered for the Featured Actor in a Play category for his work in Dog Day Afternoon. Normally, actors who are above the show title in the opening night Playbill are considered leading, while actors underneath are supporting.
All other eligibility is consistent with the opening-night credits.
The American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards are presented by The American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League. At the American Theatre Wing, Emilio Sosa is chair, and Heather Hitchens is president and CEO. At the Broadway League, Kristin Caskey is chair, and Jason Laks is president.
