Casting is set for the previously reported U.K. premiere of The Jonathan Larson Project, which played a brief run at Off-Broadway's Orpheum Theatre last year.

Conceived by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, the production features the music and lyrics of the late Jonathan Larson (Rent) and will play the Southwark Playhouse Borough July 9-August 22 with an official opening July 13. John Simpkins will again direct.

The newly announced company will feature Max Harwood (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie film), Marcus Collins (Kinky Boots), Michael Mather (Wicked international tour), Grace Mouat (Mean Girls), and Imelda Warren-Green (Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder). Casting is by Rob Kelly.

To celebrate the spirit of the late Larson, the production is inviting performers with no professional musical stage credits to audition for the two cover roles by visiting [email protected].

The Jonathan Larson Project is a show about a young man following his heart in New York City and trying to change the world. The show offers a rare window into Larson’s creative world, featuring previously unheard songs from the late composer’s archives.

Director Simpkins said in an earlier statement, “Jonathan Larson changed the face of musical theatre. It is an enormous honor to be entrusted with directing this new production in the U.K. following our success Off-Broadway.”

Jonathan Larson’s family added, "We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring Jonathan’s lesser-known music to a British audience. His spirit is very much alive in all these songs and, although written long ago, the work remains more relevant now than ever.”

The Jonathan Larson Project contains songs from a variety of unproduced Larson shows, including 1984 and Superbia, as well as songs that were cut from Rent and tick, tick…BOOM!, songs written for theatrical revues and for the radio, and a variety of songs never publicly performed or recorded before The Jonathan Larson Project. The project was originally presented as a concert at 54 Below in fall 2018 and was released as an album from Ghostlight Records in 2019.

The creative team also includes musical director Livi Van Warmelo, set and costume designer Justin Williams, and lighting designer Samuel Biondolillo with general management by Thomas Hopkins Productions.

Thomas Hopkins and Sams Entertainment are producing with Julie Larson as executive producer.
