AJ McLean—of Backstreet Boys fame—hosted a sing-along performance of the hit Broadway musical & Juliet May 16 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, and even got in on the action with a special encore performance.
The boy band legend surprised the audience at the end of the performance by coming out to join the show's Du Bois Band for an encore of the Backstreet Boys hit "Everybody." Check out the performance above, and read on to see photos of McLean from throughout the evening, including his stint signing for the legion of fans at the stage door.
The sing-along performance was part of the month-long “It’s Gonna Be May" celebration series at & Juliet, inspired by the N'SYNC song also featured in the musical.
The Broadway company currently features Tony nominee Maya Boyd as Juliet, Oliver Tompsett as William Shakespeare, Olivier winner David Bedella as Lance, Tony nominee Betsy Wolfe as Anne Hathaway, Justin David Sullivan as May, Charity Angél Dawson as Angélique, Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo, and Philippe Arroyo as Francois. For the sing-along performance, the role of Angélique was played by Megan Kane.
The ensemble includes Daniel Assetta, Andrew Chappelle, Michael Iván Carrier, Phil Colgan, Virgil Gadson, Najah Hetsberger, Makai Hernandez, Bobby “Pocket” Horner, Joomin Hwang, Kane, Alaina Vi Maderal, Daniel J. Maldonado, Brittany Nicholas, Ava Noble, Jasmine Rafael, Matt Raffy, Tiernan Tunnicliffe, and Rachel Webb.
The hit musical, nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, flips the script on the William Shakespeare classic, imagining what would happen next if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo.
Featuring a book by David West Read, the score includes a mix of tunes by Max Martin and more, including “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” “I Want It That Way,” and “Confident.”
The production also has direction by Luke Sheppard, choreography by Jennifer Weber, musical supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Bill Sherman, scenic design by Soutra Gilmour, costume design by Paloma Young, lighting design by Howard Hudson, sound design by Gareth Owen, video projection design by Andrzej Goulding, hair, wig, and makeup design by J.
