The Metropolitan Opera's new production of Vincenzo Bellini's I Puritani opened December 31, 2025—and the reviews are in!
Soprano Lisette Oropesa leads the cast as Elvira, with tenor Lawrence Brownlee and baritone Artur Ruciński as her rival Royalist and Roundhead suitors, who fight for her hand, and for the future of England amid the English Civil War. I Puritani was the final opera completed by Bellini before his death at the age of 34. His operas are known for their highly virtuosic vocal writing, which is on full display in I Puritani. The role of Elvira calls for challenging coloratura singing, while Arturo calls for a high F above C, the highest written tenor note in the standard operatic repertoire.

Playbill will continue to update this list as reviews come in.
The complete cast includes bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira's uncle Giorgio, bass-baritone David Pittsinger as her father Gualtiero, and mezzo-soprano Eve Gigliotti as Enrichetta, widow of the recently-deposed King Charles I.
Charles Edwards makes his house directorial debut helming the production. Edwards has also designed the sets for the production, his designs having previously been seen at the Met in several productions including Il Trovatore, Adriana Lecouvreur, and Fedora. The creative team for I Puritani also includes costume designer Gabrielle Dalton, lighting designer Tim Mitchell, and movement director Tim Claydon.
I Puritani runs through January 18, 2026. For more information, visit MetOpera.org.
