Daniel Radcliffe stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers April 9 to talk about starring in Broadway's Merrily We Roll Along, including the backstage hijinks. According to the Harry Potter actor, co-star Jonathan Groff prepares for a particularly dramatic scene not by focusing on the text or listening to moody music, but by tickling Radcliffe. Yes, reader, there's backstage tickling happening at the Hudson.
Watch Radcliffe tell the tale above.
Earlier in Radcliffe's appearance, he shared some stories about audience reactions to the Stephen Sondheim revival, including one poor audience member who somehow didn't realize until the final scene that the story was being told backwards. Watch that story and more below.
The revival of Merrily We Roll Along opened October 10, 2023, at the Hudson Theatre, where it will continue through July 7. Directed by Olivier winner Maria Friedman, Merrily We Roll Along features music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by George Furth.
The revival stars Radcliffe as Charley Kringas, Groff as Franklin Shepard, and Lindsay Mendez as Mary Flynn. The trio are all reprising their performances from the production's 2022 Off-Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop, along with Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie Carnegie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Shepard, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephson. Max Rackenberg, Rocco Van Auken, and Brady Wagner share the role of Frank Jr.
