Chicago News Paul Tazewell to Receive Costume Exhibition at Chicago's Griffin Museum

Tazewell's work from Hamilton, Wicked, West Side Story, and more will be on display to the public.

Oscar and Tony winning costume designer Paul Tazwell will exhibit his work next year at Chicago's Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

Premiering January 19, 2026, the Crafting Character: The Costumes of Paul Tazewell will display costumes from Hamilton, Wicked, West Side Story, and more. The exhibit will be a multimedia experience, narrated by Tazewell as visitors are taken through displays of his costumes, sketches, and behind-the-scenes photos and videos. 

Highlights will include Glinda's pink bubble dress from Wicked, Janelle Monae's "Time Traveling Dandy" Met Gala outfit, the original Schuyler Sister's winter ball gowns from Hamilton, Anita's yellow dress from West Side Story, King George's royal garb from Hamilton, Elphaba's Emerald City Dress from Wicked, and more. 

Tazewell’s work in theatre, film, and television has been truly groundbreaking. In 2025, he made history as the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Wicked. His additional accolades include Tony wins for Death Becomes Her and Hamilton, and an Emmy for The Wiz! Live
