From Staten Island to Times Square, the classic arts scene in New York is neve quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:
American Ballet Theatre’s production of Christopher Wheeldon’s Like Water For Chocolate continues through July 1 at the Metropolitan Opera House. The ballet, with a score by Joby Talbot, concerns the familiar themes of family, forbidden love, and food.
The Metropolitan Opera’s Summer Recital Series continues this week with performances at Williamsbridge Oval in the Bronx (June 26), Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens (June 28), and Clove Lakes Park on Staten Island (June 30). Soprano Erika Baikoff, mezzo-soprano Cierra Byrd, and baritone Thomas Glass will perform, accompanied by assistant conductor Juan José Lázaro.
The Naïssam Jalal Trio will perform July 29 at Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium. Joined by pianist Leonardo Montana and double bassist Claude Tchamitchian, flautist Naïssam Jalal “[transcends] the essence of European and Arab classical music, the art of jazz improvisation, the urgency of Hip-Hop, the euphoria of funk, and the vitality of traditions from Africa.”
June 29, Mark Morris Dance Group’s Dance for PD will offer a free inclusive dance class at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. The dance class, designed to be accessible for people with mobility concerns, will include both seated and standing options.
Following a summer solstice Opera in the Garden concert last week, On Site Opera returns this week to the West Side Community Garden June 28, performing excerpts from Carmen.
Trio Fadolín, a trio comprising violin, cello, and a six-string violin relative called the fadolín, returns to Carnegie Hall Citywide June 29, performing a free concert in Times Square.
The Litton Duo, comprising pianist Andrew Litton and violist Katharina Kang Litton, comes to Bargemusic June 30 for a concert of works by Brahms, Robert Fuchs, Egon Kornauth, and the New York premiere of Gity Razaz’s Spellbound for solo viola.
July 1, Bargemusic will present the Horszowski Trio in a concert of Haydn and Schubert. This will be followed July 2 by pianist Inna Faliks in a concert of works by Fanny Mendelsohn, John Corigliano, and more classic and modern composers.
