Audible Theater begins the Off-Broadway bow of Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson's Mexodus at their Minetta Lane Theater September 9, with opening night set for September 18. The extended run is set to continue through October 18. David Mendizábal is directing.
The work looks to uncover the stories behind overlooked portions of the Underground Railroad that led into Mexico, with both Quijada and Robinson also performing in the "live-looping" musical. The play is making its New York debut after three earlier stagings, at Baltimore Center Stage, Washington, D.C's Mosaic Theater Company, and California's Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The piece also got a developmental staging at New York Stage and Film. The play will be recorded for release as an Audible Original during the Off-Broadway run.
P3 Productions is collaborating with Audible to produce.
"Music is the vessel that allows us to connect this vital story to our world today, and we’re thrilled to join forces with the incredible Audible Theater and P3 Productions teams to present this New York City premiere," said Quijada and Robinson in an earlier joint statement. "In reuniting with our visionary director David Mendizábal, we can’t wait to continue sharing the power and resilience at the heart of this work."
The production features scenic design by Riw Rakkulchon, costume design by David Mendizábal, lighting design by Mextly Couzin, sound design by Mikhail Fiksel, projection design by Johnny Moreno, and choreography by Tony Thomas. Hope Villaneuva will serve as production stage manager, and casting is by Claire Yenson. Beacon Theatrical Services is providing theatrical supervision, and ShowTown Theatricals is general manager.
