Broadway actor Max Mendoza Crumm's Kickstarter campaign for their filmed series of puppet musical shorts—The Cosmic Clubhouse—wrapped up December 24, bringing in $15,710, a nice chunk above its initial $15,000 goal.
Crumm will use the funds raised to make a 15-minute "creature-driven musical short" featuring an ensemble of original creature characters crafted from "felt, fabric, and found materials," living in a magical clubhouse hideaway constructed from "cardboard, sparkles, forest bits, and paint." Crumm is leading the project with a handcrafted vision—no artificial intelligence tools, just "real music and real weird joy."
“Puppets are my first love. I am a Muppet. I’ve always loved warm, handmade story worlds,” Crumm said in an earlier statement. “This one took shape piece by piece, and now I’m excited to develop it further with a community behind it.”
Crumm rose to prominence winning the reality competition Grease: You're the One That I Want, which led to a Broadway debut as Danny Zuko in the 2007 revival of Grease. They've since returned to the Main Stem in Disaster!, and Off-Broadway in F#%king Everything, The Fantasticks, and The Connector, along with Easy A on screen.
The campaign is still accepting late pledges. For more information, click here.
