Casting is set for the two new musicals—Peripheral and Ink & Paint—that will be workshopped during the upcoming Newport NewWorks Musical Festival.
The festival, taking place August 3-17 in Rhode Island, will feature two weeks of workshops and rehearsals, leading to public presentations of the two new shows.
Peripheral—from Mark Aaron James and Sarah Elizabeth Grace—tells the story of the "people captured just outside the frame, reframing our understanding of history and identity," according to press notes. Directed by Sean Daniels with music direction by Andy Collopy, the cast will include Major Curda (KPOP), Joe Kinosian (Murder for Two), Julia Knitel (Dead Outlaw), Jennifer Sanchez (Real Woman Have Curves), Hannah Shealy (The Gilded Age), and Gregory Treco (Hamilton).
Ink & Paint—the untold story about the women behind Disney's golden age of animation—features music, lyrics, and concept by Danielle Moore and a book and additional lyrics by Marjorie Duffield. Directed by Liz Carlson with music direction by Josh Kight, the cast will include Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid), Gwen Hollander (Little Women), Gizel Jiménez (Wicked), Ashley Spencer (Hairspray), Natalie Shaw (Cinderella), and Emily Xu Hall (As You Like It).
The festival is part of Newport NewWorks, the nonprofit founded by Oscar-nominated producer Peilin Chou and theatre and film producer Jeanne Hagerty that is dedicated to the creative development of original musicals.
