Good Morning America tested Jinkx Monsoon's savvy under pressure on a recent visit by having her flash respond to hypotheticals. Scenarios included inserting a surprise tap number into Oh, Mary! (which she does in giant heels!) and being told you're the understudy for Mary's Husband (aka Abraham Lincoln) five minutes before you're to go on.
"Well, everyone, this is how it goes. Abraham Lincoln is now a trans woman, and that's all there is to it," she answers cheekily. "Since lawmakers get to rewrite history, why can't I?" See the entire interview above.
Monsoon joined the Cole Escola comedy at the Lyceum Theatre August 4, alongside fellow new cast members Kumail Nanjiani (Marvel's Eternals) as Mary's Husband, Michael Urie (Once Upon a Mattress) as Mary's Teacher, and Jenn Harris (Elsbeth) as Mary's Chaperone. Original cast member Tony Macht continues with the production as Mary's Husband's Assistant. The new cast is set to perform through September 28.
Oh, Mary! centers on famous First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In Escola's demented take (or as press notes put it, "through the lens of an idiot"), Mary Todd becomes a madcap, cabaret-obsessed alcoholic.
