Jackman said he was well aware of the irony.
"Peter at the time was the biggest selling artist ever to play Radio City Music Hall," Jackman said backstage at the Tony Awards ceremony. "And I had his dressing room. The whole thing was kind of spooky. To receive the award in Radio City was a fantastic twist of fate. I feel his spirit in the theatre eight times a week, but I definitely know he was there tonight."
Jackman said his win won't change his scheduled Sept. 12 departure date from Oz; he leaves the show to begin work on the film "The Fountain."
"I think closing this will be one of the hardest thing I've ever done," he observed. He then added "I have a feeling this won't be the last of this show as far as I'm concerned."
