HBO is moving ahead with its film adaptation of the 2010 Broadway musical American Idiot, which features music from the album of the same title by the rock group Green Day, according to the entertainment website NME.
Green Day singer/guitarist and co-composer Billie Joe Armstrong, who stepped into the show during its Broadway run, said he will play the role of St. Jimmy in the film.
“That’s the plan right now, yeah,” Armstrong told the site. “We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment."
No timetable for the film’s premiere was reported.
Rolin Jones is adapting Armstrong‘s and Michael Mayer’s script about the life paths of three friends who grow up unhappily in a stifling vision of suburbia. One joins the military, one sinks into a world of drugs and the third tries to build a relationship with his pregnant girlfriend.
The show ran 422 performances on Broadway.
