You could be in the classroom where it happens in just a few years. Concord Theatricals has picked up licensing rights for Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony- and Pulitzer-winning mega-hit Hamilton. And while the Broadway production and tours show no signs of stopping (meaning don't expect any new regional Hamiltons any time soon), the company is working on a Teen Edition that will be available for young performers beginning in 2028. Yes—Hamilton will soon be headed to a high school near you.
The acquisition was expected, as Concord is already the home of Miranda's In the Heights and 21 Chump Street.
“I am thrilled that Hamilton is joining In The Heights and 21 Chump Street as part of the Concord Theatricals family,” says Miranda in a statement. “I fell in love with theatre not by seeing a lot of Broadway shows, but via my parents' vinyl cast albums and participating in our high school's annual musicals. I’m excited to see students take on these roles and to share this story from school stages in their communities. It's only a matter of time."
“We couldn’t be prouder to continue to represent Lin-Manuel’s work and to bring his astounding, game-changing show to educators and students worldwide,” adds Concord Chief Theatricals Executive Sean Patrick Flahaven. “His genius combination of history, politics, and dynamic music is unique and thrilling. And on a personal note, this is a full-circle moment, having had the honor to be involved in its development, production, and recording.”
Miranda revealed the exciting acquisition from the stage of Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre following the musical's November 18 performance. See Miranda break the news in the video below.
The musical—with a book, music, and lyrics by Miranda—centers on American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, using Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton as its source material. Translating the story and characters to the musical world of hip-hop, Miranda used the musical to re-imagine the American mythos and re-frame it within the multi-cultural reality of our country, creating Broadway's biggest cultural and most wide-reaching cultural touchstone in decades in the process. The work debuted Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2014, transferring to Broadway the next year and quickly becoming one of the Main Stem's hottest tickets. After winning the Tony and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the show has continued to be one of Broadway's most enduring and best-selling titles. The Broadway cast album was certified Diamond by the RIAA 2023, and is the only cast album ever to reach number one on Billboard's Rap Albums chart.
The show was filmed live onstage with its original Broadway cast—led by Miranda himself in the title role—and has been streaming on Disney+ since 2020. The show continues its hit run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, alongside tours in the U.S. and internationally and a West End bow.
