Tony winner and Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo will go from a not-so-Wicked witch to a bad fairy when she lends her voice to the upcoming animated film from Warner Bros. Pictures, Bad Fairies.
The original musical comedy, following a subversive gang of fairies as they shake up their magical world, will be directed by Megan Nicole Dong and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, from an original screenplay by Deborah Frances-White.
The Color Purple Tony winner Erivo, who will soon be seen in the second half of the two-part Wicked film adaptation, will voice the role of Jayne Staplegun, a trailblazing fairy whose defiant streak sparks a rebellion.
Tony-winning Six The Musical creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss are writing the original songs with Grammy nominee Isabella “Machine” Summers (Florence + The Machine) composing the score and contributing to the songs.
The creative team for Bad Fairies also includes producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James C.J. Williams, character designer Uwe Heidschötter, and heads of story Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt.
Production is currently underway in London, with DNEG Animation serving as digital partner. Bad Fairies will be the first feature released under the first look deal between Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation and will debut theatrically via Warner Bros. Pictures May 21, 2027.
The film will mark Erivo’s first lead role in a major animated feature.
