Apparently Broadway doesn't always hate sports. Tony nominee Tom Francis (Sunset Blvd.) and The Outsiders star Brent Comer have both been cast in the upcoming Netflix film The Mosquito Bowl, based on Buzz Bissinger's book, per Variety.
Comer will play George Murphy, a University of Notre Dame quarterback stationed in the South Pacific in World War II. The real-life story follows a group of American Marines whose war-torn spirits are raised by a football game, the titular Mosquito Bowl, played on Christmas Eve in 1944.
Comer will take a leave of absence from The Outsiders to make the film. Dates for his hiatus are to be announced.
Also slated to star are Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, and Ray Nicholson. The film is scheduled to begin filming next month in Australia.
Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) is writing (with Mark L. Smith) and directing, and produces alongside Alex Gayner and Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment. Ezra Emanuel is executive producing.
The film begins principal photography in Australia in August.
