It's no wonder Second Stage's production of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Appropriate is poised to get a commercial extension and transfer. Last week, the penultimate week of the show's Second Stage run, brought in $859,269, the highest gross so far. Only family favorite Harry Potter and the Cursed Child grossed more than that as far as Broadway plays are concerned, and that's with three times the seating capacity. The play is set to play its final performance at the Hayes March 3, after which the production is packing up and crossing Broadway to the Belasco, which seats almost double what the Hayes can accommodate. It must be a welcome whiplash for Second Stage, which announced that rent prices have forced them to give up their Off-Broadway theatre, the Tony Kiser, last week.

Most of the rest of last week's grosses were business as usual, though Wicked toppled top-grossing mainstay The Lion King with a $2.02 million take. With current stars Alyssa Fox, McKenzie Kurtz, John Dossett, Michele Pawk, and Kimber Elayne Sprawl set to depart the production March 3, perhaps fans are heading to the Gershwin for one last trip to Oz with the 20th anniversary cast.

The Lion King took the No. 2 slot this time around, followed by Hamilton, Merrily We Roll Along, and MJ The Musical.

Grosses fell somewhat from the previous week's high, bringing in $26 million (down from $26.9 million). The spring season is waiting in the wings, which could change fortunes on the Main Stem before too long. The newest musical, Water for Elephants, brought in $344,493 with just its two first previews last week. If that performance continues, we'll be welcoming it to The $1 Million Club next week. The Notebook is on a similar trajectory, though it didn't quite break the $1 million mark last week as it did the week previous. Still in previews, and still playing only seven performances instead of the traditional eight, there seems to be a lot of potential for this title to become a Broadway success.
